About Brickfields
About Brickfields
Brickfields is a medium-sized town and a residential neighbourhood located just outside central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is known as Kuala Lumpur’s Little India due to its high percentage of Indian residents and businesses.
History
Brickfields has a unique name. It’s quite catchy actually because one would think that this place is possibly a large field filled with bricks. Ironically, that is pretty much how Brickfields got its name. This area was initially developed by Yap Kwan Seng, the fifth and last Kapitan Cina of Kuala Lumpur. Due to the increased demand for bricks in Kuala Lumpur at the time, he established a kiln in a district and eventually, Brickfields became the centre for brick-making as the whole area is a clay pit. Therefore, Brickfields became synonymous with good quality bricks.
Furthermore, the British authorities brought people from India to work at the railway and depot. The Indian community lived in staff quarters and today the depot has been transformed into the transportation hub known as KL Sentral.
Culture
Many parts of Brickfields are made up of buildings listed for their historical and architectural significance. Along Jalan Tun Sambanthan 4 is the century old Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) which has become an integral landmark in Brickfields. Further down along Jalan Tun Sambanthan is the Vivekananda Ashram that was built in the early 19th century. The Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) which is located along Jalan Tebing was built to assist the visually impaired by providing them with services and opportunities to enhance their  quality of life.
Furthermore, Brickfields has many places of worships representing the various religions of Malaysia. Another main attraction in Brickfields is the Temple of Fine Arts located along Jalan Berhala. The Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) is a cultural organisation offering various courses relating mainly to Indian music, dance and arts. It is also an outstanding facility for all types of live music and a pioneering centre for music education. Besides offering courses, the TFA hosts installations and exhibitions by the world's leading artists.
Shopping and Entertainment
Brickfields is well known for it's shopping. A rainbow of colours greets you as you wind your way through the streets. With the local shops around, you can buy almost anything that’s Indian, from handicrafts and Kashmiri silk to peacock feathers and flower garlands. Glittering silk-threaded saris, brassware and Indian-designed jewellery are particularly good buys. You’ll be charmed by jewelers selling silver amulets, bridal ornaments as well as cheap, colourful bangles, ankle chains and other adornments.
Sports and Recreation
Brickfields is famous for its sports activities offered by the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Courts (for tennis, basketball and volleyball) and the football field are available for booking. Football teams can often be seen playing friendly matches at the field. They also provide martial arts training in Aikido, Karate and Judo. Further, for those of you who would like to dance, YMCA offers classes in a wide variety of dance styles which include Latin, Ballroom, Social, Belly, Scottish, Line and aerobics lessons as well. They conduct these classes weekly and welcome anyone with a passion for dance. Apart from that, lots of programs such as ‘Food Drive & Donate’, ‘World Animal Day’, ‘Budding Writers’ and lots more fun activities that cater to family and friends.

The KL Sentral development project is one of Kuala Lumpur’s largest development projects encompassing an area of 290,000 square metres.
