This course will help you develop and refine the practical operational skills and creative communication acumen in the planning, organising, and monitoring of event campaigns. As the programme integrates strategic communication with event management, you will be exposed to a wide range of modules such as media audiences, event management, PR campaign strategies, event sponsorship and fundraising, amongst others. 

With this Course, You Will:

  • Develop and refine the practical operational skills and creative communication acumen needed in the planning, organising, and monitoring of event campaigns.
  • Receive exposure to a wide range of MICE-related modules such as media audiences, event management, PR campaign strategies, event sponsorship and fundraising.
  • Progress to an advance standing into Year 2 of the BA (Hons) Media, Culture and Communication offered by the University of Sunderland.

COURSE MODULES

Year 1

Creative Writing

You will be introduced to creative writing through the analysis of literature and understanding of the narrative structure and thematic approach within creative writing. You will also be exposed to the means and methods of using English to write creatively and effectively.

Computer Graphics

You will explore basic design software in use today, while being taught to handle simple computer design functions and applications.

Presentation Skills

You will be exposed to the skills needed for effective presentations. This module also encourages you to think critically about your audience and your purpose of presenting while planning for and delivering a presentation.

Video Production

You will learn the technical practices and creative skills required to produce a video through practical workshops, supervised exercises, screenings and discussions. The module also teaches students how to use video equipment and employ the right techniques in field productions. 

Writing For the Media

This introductory module will teach you a broad range of writing techniques which are relevant to and used in the media industry today. Both fiction and non-fiction writing methods will be taught. 

Introduction to Events

You will be exposed to the understanding of event management theories and practice and the importance of Event Management as a management function. This module also increases your understanding of event management practice through case studies and assignments, as well as enhances your creativity in problem-solving. 

Introduction to Mass Communication

This module encourages you to reflect upon the relationship between mass communication and our society. You will be taught the various communication elements and processes in order to better understand media messages and the impact of media content on audience attitudes and behaviours.

Communication in A Globalised World

You will explore cross-cultural communication in its role as a strategically important component in business, media studies and human communication in general. Due to technology and the Internet, comprehending cross-cultural communication is important for understanding diverse workforces or global business plans.

Media Audiences

Explore the concept of media audiences from four broad perspectives: as consumers of mass media, as market constructions and commodities, as users of media, and as producers and subcultures of mass media. 

Media, Culture and Society

This module serves as your introductory overview of various key concepts and approaches in understanding media and cultural studies. You will explore, discuss and analyse various ideologies, cultures, media, power, meanings, and approaches.  

New Media Studies

You will be taught critical concepts and hands-on skills related to ‘new social media’. We will consider the significant shifts of new media in the reading, viewing and listening experiences while remaining mindful of new media’s connections with the older media.

Digital Photography

This module provides you with a basic introduction to photography and digital imaging. It covers a range of related topics from display design to basic knowledge on how to use a DSLR.

Year 2

Event Management

This module introduces you to the event management process, providing you with a better understanding of the challenges faced by industry professionals when managing an event. 

Integrated Marketing Communications

This module exposes you to the various marketing communications aspects (advertising, sales promotion, public relations, direct marketing and interactive marketing, and personal selling) required to effectively promote a product. 

Communication Research

You will be introduced to the basics of academic research and writing.  

Corporate Events

You will be equipped with an extensive knowledge on corporate events and the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in today’s society. 

Visual Communication

This module looks at a cultural analysis of visuals and their meanings. Workshops/studio time will be utilised to experiment with these relationships and further explore your technical skills and knowledge.

PR Campaign Strategies

This module is designed to give you a step-by-step checklist for planning and implementing PR campaigns. You will also be taught the essential knowledge and cutting-edge tools that are needed to execute events that are part of campaigns. 

Event Sponsorship and Fundraising

This module aims to broaden your knowledge on the fundraising concepts for events. It focuses on teaching you how to gain sponsors, manage sponsorship requirements, and evaluate a sponsor’s effectiveness. The assessment culminates in a sponsorship proposal. 

Entertainment and Leisure Events

This module develops your knowledge on special events and how one should run these events. You will hopefully gain an interest in this area of event planning and learn the intricacies of managing various parties within the entertainment industry.

Industry Project

This module develops strategies which will extend learning beyond the educational institution, merging with relevant industries. The Industry Project module exposes you to industry practices, testing your knowledge, communication skills and practical skills nurtured from semester 1 onwards.  

ELECTIVE MODULES

Principles of Journalism

This module introduces you to the field of journalism. You will learn how journalism differs significantly from other forms of media in terms of daily processes and practices, regulation, as well as writing techniques.

Principles of Advertising

This module underlines basic advertising concepts and relevant roles within the industry for you, including the roles of advertisers, advertising agencies, the media and other related professional bodies within the industry, as well as how the industry works to reach its target audience.

Public Relations

This introductory module provides you with an understanding of Public Relations theories and practices, and the importance and place of Public Relations as a management function. It increases this understanding through case studies and assignments, and enhances creativity amongst students in solving Public Relations problems. 

Marketing Principles

This module discusses the role of marketing, managing markets from the perspective of information system management, analysis of markets, managing products, promotions, as well as pricing and distribution strategies. 

 

MPU MODULES

Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi 1 or Pengajian Malaysia 2

Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi 1 teaches international students the basics of the Malay language to help in their daily communication. You will also learn to read, write and understand simple sentences and paragraphs in Malay. Pengajian Malaysia 2 discusses history and politics, the Constitution, administrative systems and structures, community and unity, nation-building and religious beliefs. You will foster a strong sense of national identity and patriotism

Study of Religions

This module aims to develop your understanding of the living religions of the world with major emphasis on fundamental doctrines and beliefs, historical development, institutions, teachings and also practices.

Bahasa Kebangsaan A or Problem Solving and Decision Making

Bahasa Kebangsaan A helps in grasping the national language to effectively communicate, and express thoughts clearly and creatively through verbal and written communication. Problem Solving And Decision Making introduces you to the concepts and strategies in problem solving and decision making with the intention of providing you with the concepts, processes and possible outcomes in problem solving and decision making. Students are expected to apply these concepts and processes to a variety to problems and scenarios within the creative communication industry.
