AROUND THE CAMPFIRE: Where Words Become Worlds with BAC Spoken World Club
By Jane Dava, for BAC Engage 2026

What happens when a club AGM becomes a hike through the woods? You get lost, meet a few chaotic strangers, survive a bear attack, stumble upon a poet under a tree, and somehow end the journey gathered around a campfire.
Welcome to BAC Spoken Word Club, a creative sanctuary where storytelling goes beyond the written word. Through theatrical play, rhythmic dance, and powerful vocals, they bring raw ideas to life on stage.
A Journey Beyond the Ordinary
On September 24th, 2026, the BACPAC hall transformed into a warm, glowing campsite for the BAC Spoken Word Club’s 26/27 Annual General Meeting: Around the Campfire.
Dressed in cozy earth tones and warm-hued outfits, nearly 50 audience members, mostly vibrant new faces from foundation and degree intakes, stepped into a room lit by soft, battery-operated candles, greeted by the comforting aroma of marshmallows, cream puffs, and chocolate treats. This was no traditional meeting. It was an interactive, narrative-driven play where the audience didn’t just watch, they guided the story.
The story:
Deep in the heart of an unfamiliar wood, a group of lost travellers set out on an unexpected journey. Guided by the Club President’s opening speech, the woodland expedition officially began at a sudden fork in the trail. Here, the members of the Presidential Office found themselves stranded in the dense thickets. Forced to make a choice, they leaned on the audience to vote on their path before breaking the tension with a series of hilarious, cringe-worthy poses to introduce themselves.

Resuming their hike, the travellers stumbled into a brightly lit, beautifully decorated clearing. Out of the shadows emerged the Events & Aesthetics department, who instantly threw the group into chaos with an energetic, audience-prompted “Chaotic Bear-Attack Frenzy” sequence.
Now lost together, the two groups trekked deeper into the woods until a suspicious rustling echoed from the bushes. Suddenly, the Publicity & Marketing team burst onto the scene with cameras flashing, transforming the rugged forest floor into a high-fashion runway strut.

Just as the combined group spotted a discouraging signpost reading “40km to Safety,” panic began to set in. But hope appeared beneath the shade of a nearby tree, where a solitary writer from the Editorial department sat crafting poetry. She stepped forward to deliver a heartfelt, original spoken word piece, restoring calm to the weary hikers.

Recognising that strength lay in unity, all four departments gathered their resources to kindle a cozy campfire as night fell. Sitting together around the warmth of the glowing centrepiece, the department leaders unveiled their upcoming plans for the 26/27 tenure, setting the stage for an open-mic “Show & Tell” where stories, songs, and poetry echoed beneath the canopy late into the night.

A massive well done to the entire SWC committee and everyone who made this AGM an interesting and unforgettable journey for the participants, keep it up, Spoken Word Club!
