Beyond the Classroom: BAC Law Society Explores Global Legal Practice at Trovers & Hamlins

Bridging ambition with opportunity, the BAC Law Society’s inaugural visit to Trowers & Hamlins on 26 May 2026 provided students with a valuable glimpse into the dynamic world of international legal practice, professional excellence, and cross-border collaboration.

With a select group of 20 participants, the visit offered an intimate and highly interactive learning experience. Students were warmly welcomed by the firm’s lawyers and introduced to the environment of an international law firm, where legal expertise, commercial awareness, and cross-border collaboration converge to serve clients across multiple industries and jurisdictions.

Learning from the Experts

A key highlight of the visit was the opportunity to learn directly from experienced legal practitioners. Through a series of engaging presentations, students gained insights into diverse areas of legal practice and discovered how legal expertise is applied in both local and international contexts. The distinguished speakers shared valuable perspectives from their respective practice areas, offering students a deeper understanding of the realities of modern legal practice.

Mr Geoff Allen opened the session with an introduction to Trowers & Hamlins, followed by Mr Bryan Cheng sharing insights into corporate transactions, commercial advisory work, in the fast-paced nature of business law, and Mr Jian-Jie Phang from the Banking and Finance team, who introduced students to the complexities of financing transactions and the legal frameworks that support business and infrastructure development. His presentation demonstrated the critical role lawyers play in facilitating financial arrangements and managing legal risks.

They also heard  Mr. Sunil Singh who explored the challenges that arise in large-scale construction projects and, Ms Villasha Anbalagan from the Dispute Resolution and Litigation practice group who shared her experiences handling contentious matters and representing clients in legal proceedings.  Ms Aishah Rizal, representing the Projects, Energy and Infrastructure practice group, introduced students to one of the most specialized areas of legal practice.

Beyond technical legal knowledge, the speakers emphasized the importance of commercial awareness, adaptability, teamwork, communication skills, and cross-border collaboration. Their insights reinforced the idea that success in today’s legal profession requires not only legal expertise but also the ability to navigate complex business environments and work effectively across jurisdictions. The interactive question-and-answer session further enriched the experience, allowing students to engage directly with practitioners, seek clarification on various practice areas, and gain valuable advice on career development and professional growth.

As students stepped out of the firm’s doors, they carried with them more than just knowledge—they left with inspiration, professional connections, and a deeper appreciation of the limitless possibilities within the legal profession.

The Trowers & Hamlins Law Firm Visit was an incredibly enriching experience that began with an insightful introduction to the firm’s international presence, cross-border capabilities and specialised areas of law. The presentations were highly informative, particularly the discussions on Projects, Energy and Infrastructure and Construction Disputes, which broadened my understanding of career opportunities within the legal profession. The networking session also provided a wonderful opportunity to interact with experienced practitioners and gain practical career advice.
