Learning Beyond Books: BAC Students go behind the scenes at Zoo Negara for the second time

BAC Education, represented by students of BAC, IACT & UNIMY, stepped beyond the classroom and into the heart of wildlife conservation on 29th & 30th May, participating for the second time in the Zoo Negara’s KeeperKu Program 2026 . This program, initiated by Malaysia’s National Zoo was also participated by many other schools and higher institutions, where students embraced a rare opportunity to experience what it truly means to care for animals and protect biodiversity. The program offers hands-on exposure to real zookeeping responsibilities, allowing participants to experience the daily operations of Malaysia’s National Zoo while fostering a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation.

A Day in the Life of a Zookeeper – Skills That Last a Lifetime

Volunteering at Zoo Negara gave me the chance to support the zoo’s activities, work with other volunteers, and gain a better understanding of the care and effort needed to protect animals. It also showed me how much work goes on behind the scenes that most visitors never see, from preparing food to maintaining the animals’ habitats and ensuring their well-being.

Volunteering at Zoo Negara was a memorable experience that gave me a new appreciation for the dedication behind animal care. I also learned that the mosquitoes were more than happy to accept my blood donation, but it was all worth it for such a meaningful experience. I am grateful for the opportunity and the memories I made along the way.

My experience at Zoo Negara was both challenging and rewarding. I was assigned to the Reptile Centre, which was especially difficult because I have a phobia of reptiles.

Overall, this experience taught me to step out of my comfort zone and face my fears. It was a memorable experience that helped me build confidence and overcome my fear of reptiles, especially snakes.

One lesson that stayed with me was that animals born and raised in zoos cannot always survive in the wild. Without the skills to find food, avoid predators, or adapt to harsh conditions, releasing them may do more harm than good. This taught me that animal welfare is more complex than it seems.

Although my experience lasted only one day, it left me with lasting memories and a newfound respect for zookeepers. It taught me that caring for wildlife requires compassion, knowledge, responsibility, and humility.

As the day concluded, students left Zoo Negara not only with new understanding and skills, but also with unforgettable memories and a renewed respect for the natural world. For many, the experience served as a powerful reminder that even small efforts can contribute to meaningful change in wildlife conservatio

A Meaningful and Memorable Experience

The KeeperKu Program aligns perfectly with BAC Education Group’s commitment to holistic education, one that extends learning beyond textbooks and lectures. By participating in this program, students gained real-world exposure, developed a love for animals, and strengthened their sense of environmental responsibility.

BAC Education Group is truly proud to support initiatives that inspire students to learn, serve, and make a positive impact on the world around them, empowering students through real-world experiences that shape character and purpose. A big shoutout to the students who participated to make this two days a success and to Malaysia’s National Zoo for this beautiful program and experience.
