On 9th July 2025, ALSA BAC successfully hosted and participated in a Mock Arbitration Moot Simulation in collaboration with LAW Partnership at the BAC PJ Flagship Campus. This event was crafted to replicate a real-life arbitration hearing, giving participants a hands-on opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge of international commercial arbitration in a dynamic, courtroom-style environment.

In preparation for the moot, students engaged in rigorous research, crafted detailed written submissions, and honed their oral advocacy skills. The process sharpened their abilities in legal analysis, public speaking, teamwork, and time management.

During the simulation, each team argued their case before a panel acting as an arbitral tribunal, and was evaluated on their legal reasoning, clarity, and persuasiveness. A full dry run was also conducted prior to the event to ensure every detail, from logistics to legal arguments, was meticulously prepared and ready for execution.

The day began with the arrival of the organising committee, making sure the venue set-up was in accordance with the layout practiced, followed by a short brief internal dry run to ensure everything was in order before the official commencement.

The event then commenced with a brief introduction from the emcee and with the ALSA team assuming the role of the Claimant/Respondent. The simulation followed standard arbitral procedures under the section rules, providing an authentic experience that mirrored the formalities and legal challenges of actual arbitration. The distinguished guest Arbitrator was Mr. Julius, our very own BAC lecturer who is also very experienced in the mooting arena. The opportunity for students taking on the roles of Claimants, Respondents, Arbitrators, and Oralist is a means to give them a realistic experience of arbitration proceedings. The simulation was a focused, engaging exercise that allowed participants to showcase their advocacy and reasoning skills.

The team moved into a Q&A sharing session once the simulation concluded. Mr. Julius, along with several mooters who participated as oralists, shared valuable insights, constructive feedback, and reflections on the importance of arbitration in modern legal practice. The feedback received from the panel was both constructive and encouraging. They highlighted the strengths in our argument structure and advocacy style, while also pointing out areas for improvement, such as responding more precisely to tribunal questions and enhancing the use of precedents.

Participants then enjoyed a networking and refreshment session which offered an informal opportunity to connect with peers.

This simulation not only deepened students’ understanding of arbitration procedures but also significantly boosted their confidence in public legal advocacy. It served as a valuable stepping stone towards the upcoming ALSA BAC x LAW Partnership Arbitration Moot Competition 2025, set to take place on 23rd and 24th August 2025 at the BAC PJ Flagship Campus.

The Mock Arbitration Moot Simulation proved to be a highly successful and enriching experience. Participants gained first-hand exposure to arbitration proceedings while sharpening their advocacy skills in a supportive, real-world setting. Positive feedback from both attendees and the guest arbitrator underscored the importance of such practical exercises in shaping well-rounded future legal professionals.

Congratulations to ALSA BAC, and a special thank you to all participants, committee members, and Mr. Julius for their dedication and contributions in bringing this initiative to life. This experience not only enhanced participants’ appreciation for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) but also inspired many to further explore its role in their future legal careers.
