Are Malaysian Gen-Z Cooked?
The Reality of Bullying Today
The Amnesty BAC Club held its first major event of the semester with a panel discussion titled Are Malaysian Gen-Z Cooked? – The Reality of Bullying Today.
The session featured guest speakers Mr. Nafis Halifin and Mr. Gary Anwari, both of whom offered in-depth perspectives on the evolving landscape of bullying among Malaysian youth.
Throughout the discussion, the speakers examined various forms of bullying occurring in Gen-Z spaces, from traditional school-based harassment to more subtle social and digital pressures. One of the most notable points of the session was the exploration of hierarchical culture in Malaysian schools. According to the speakers, these entrenched structures often normalise harmful behaviour, inadvertently creating environments where bullying can flourish. Their analysis prompted strong reactions from the audience, many of whom expressed interest in further dialogue on the topic.
The Q&A segment highlighted the participants’ strong engagement, with students raising thoughtful questions on the demographics most affected by bullying in Malaysia, as well as the systemic factors contributing to the issue. Organisers noted that the discussion could have easily extended for another hour, given the volume of questions and the enthusiasm shown by attendees.
In addition to the panel discussion, the Amnesty BAC Club hosted an interactive booth that attracted considerable interest. Participants were encouraged to share their thoughts and reflections in response to prompts related to bullying, contributing to a wider campus-wide dialogue on the issue.
Overall, the event received positive feedback from both speakers and students. As its first major programme of the term, the Amnesty BAC Club saw strong participation and expressed optimism for even greater student engagement in future initiatives focused on human rights awareness.
