Mooting competitions are no stranger to BAC students, especially the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court competition.
Held at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on 26 and 27 November 2022, this competition has seen the participation of BAC students every year. Our students do extremely well at mooting competitions such as this, generally making it to semi-finals or being first runner-up.
This year, BAC sent a team of students, made up of four extremely talented and eloquent speakers:
- Amirthaa A/P Suntharalingam
- Sheireen binti Ebrahim
- Chai Jia Sheng
- Divyabharthi Baradhan
With the many challenges faced throughout preparation, without the assistance of a coach, and the unfortunate event of a team member having to be on bed rest after succumbing to an injury, Team BAC gave their all.
Team BAC did themselves proud when they managed to reach the semifinals. Going up against the team from Universiti Malaya (UM), an extremely strong team based on past experience, our students then displayed good showmanship and communication skills. They won this round aginst Team UM, securing their seat to the finals
With nerves of steel, they presented their submissions the best they could and achieved 'a very first' for BAC - the title of Champion!
"We were up against some strong teams, and I didn't really expect to be able to win this competition," said Amirthaa.
This win will be a benchmark for fellow college mooters, setting the bar high to develop their legal skills while equipping themselves with invaluable experience.
Team BAC will be representing Malaysia in the International IHL Mooting Competition in Hong Kong which will take place in March 2023.
Sheireen had this to say about participating in the international rounds: "We’re very excited to represent BAC at the international level! Nonetheless as it is a competition, we are equally as nervous, but we will give our best."
This win is very momentous not just for the participants but for the entire BAC family - college mates, members of the teaching family and staff.
The BAC family will be cheering and rooting for these students as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.
We wish them the best of luck!
