BAC Law Society Explores the Heart of Malaysia’s Legislature

Echoes of Democracy: A Two-Day Visit to Parliament was a thoughtfully curated educational programme designed exclusively for BAC law students. This initiative offered participants a rare opportunity to step beyond the classroom and observe Malaysia’s legislative process in action, deepening their understanding of parliamentary democracy and legal governance.
Held at the Parliament of Malaysia, the visit offered students an immersive experience into the nation’s democratic machinery, with direct exposure to live parliamentary debates, guided tours of legislative chambers and engaging sessions with respected Members of Parliament (MPs). It was an event that brought constitutional theory to life, bridging the gap between legal education and governance.
Day 1: Stepping into History
The journey began at BAC with a smooth and efficient registration process, setting a tone of professionalism and punctuality for the days ahead. By noon, the group arrived at the Parliament complex, where anticipation quickly turned into awe as students stepped through the gates of one of Malaysia’s most iconic institutions.
A guided tour of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara offered participants an up-close look at the architecture, historical significance, and procedural layout of both legislative chambers. A standout moment of the tour was witnessing a live parliamentary debate between the Members of Parliament for Ketereh and Setiawangsa, an eye-opening experience that offered students a genuine glimpse into the spirited discussions that shape national legislation.
Dialogue with Lawmakers
One of the most impactful moment of the day was the interactive session with three distinguished Members of Parliament:
- YB Tuan Fong Kui Lun (Bukit Bintang)
- YB Tuan Teresa Kok Suh Sim (Seputeh)
- YB Tuan Lee Chean Chung (Petaling Jaya)
The MPs shared their personal journeys into politics, discussed the challenges of legislative work, and offered invaluable advice to aspiring legal professionals. The session included a vibrant Q&A segment where students engaged directly with their leaders on topics ranging from youth political engagement to urban policy issues. The MPs' openness and encouragement made a lasting impression. The day concluded with a group photo and the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the guest MPs.
Day 2: Deeper Engagement
Day 2 continued the momentum with another round of exploration and insight. After arriving at the Parliament complex, students were once again given access to the chambers, where they observed a second live debate in the Dewan Rakyat, a chance to reinforce their understanding of legislative procedures in real time.
Meet the MPs: Real Conversations, Real Lessons
The second day featured another enriching panel of MPs who shared their political and professional journeys:
- YB Tuan Wong Chen (Subang)
- YB Tuan Prabakaran a/l M Parameswaran (Batu)
- YB Rodziah binti Ismail (Ampang)
Each MP provided a unique perspective on political leadership, constituency service and the day-to-day responsibilities of elected representatives. They spoke about the human side of politics - empathy, integrity, perseverance and encouraged students to stay informed, question critically and participate actively in public affairs.
A thoughtful Q&A session followed, where students discussed themes such as political accountability, party vs. personal principles and the future of Malaysian governance. The MPs’ honest and detailed responses elevated the dialogue beyond the theoretical and into the practical realities of politics.
This two-day visit was an eye-opening journey into the heart of Malaysian democracy. Students left with a deeper appreciation for parliamentary processes, a renewed sense of civic duty and the inspiration to one day become the changemakers of tomorrow.
The event successfully fulfilled its goal of bridging academic learning with real-world experience, proving that the best legal education doesn't only come from books, but from witnessing the law in action.
Heads up and well done to the BAC Law Society for putting this 2-day visit together to give students a more comprehensive look into the Malaysian Parliament.
