BAC Law Society's Trip to Low & Partners

A Warm Welcome and a Different Kind of Law Firm

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like inside a top-tier law firm, BAC’s Law Society just had the perfect opportunity to find out. Members of the society had an amazing opportunity on the 21st of March to embark on an exclusive visit to Low & Partners, one of Malaysia’s most well-known family law firms.

With over a decade of experience handling cases from divorce planning and child custody to adoption, Low & Partners has built a strong reputation within Malaysia's legal world.

From the get-go the visit was already making a good impression; beginning with a friendly reception from Ms. Shanie Lim, who made everyone feel right at home. Especially with the first item on the agenda being a warm welcome to the firm's pantry—a perfect spot for a quick pick-me-up before the real fun begins.

However, what really stood out immediately was how Low & Partners challenged the traditional image of a law firm. Rather than a purely rigid and formal environment, the firm showed what a real modern law firm looks like—creative and professional.

A Deep Dive into Family Law

After the tour, participants were guided to the top floor for a panel discussion led by BAC Law Society’s Director of Corporate Relations, Adam. The session featured Mr. Seen Rui Yong and Mr. Tay Kit Hoo, two seasoned family law practitioners, who shared their expertise and knowledge into the realities of their profession.

Mr. Seen opened the discussion by explaining how family lawyers differ from civil litigators. He stressed the importance of empathy in handling emotionally charged cases and the need to set boundaries to remain impartial.

His storytelling ability brought the subject to life, particularly when he shared a fascinating case involving a mother diagnosed with schizophrenia. The firm had to work with a mental institution to secure her release before helping her fight for custody of her children. It was a reminder that no two cases are ever the same—every family’s story is unique.

Internships, Networking, and Future Opportunities

As the session came to a close, Ms. Shanie Lim returned to share details on internship opportunities at Low & Partners. For students hoping to get hands-on experience in family law, this was a golden opportunity to understand the firm’s application process and what they look for in interns.

The event ended with a final networking session, where participants had the chance to connect with both speakers, ask follow-up questions, and gain a deeper understanding of what life as a family lawyer truly looks like.
