Highlights from BAC's Industry Law Talks in 2025

A Year in Review

2025 was a defining year for BAC's law students and alumni. Throughout the year, our students and alumni engaged directly with judges, senior practitioners, academics, and industry leaders through a wide range of talks, forums, and career-focused events. Each session built on the last, creating a year-long conversation about justice, advocacy, constitutionalism, and the future of the legal profession.

January 2025: Law, Precedent, and Public Policy

The year began with an ICM talk titled The Evolving Role of Judges in Shaping Legal Precedents and Public Policy.

Delivered by The Hon. Justice Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, the session explored how judicial reasoning extends beyond the courtroom, influencing governance, rights, and long-term policy directions. It certainly had set the tone for a year and encouraged students to think critically about the judiciary’s wider role in society.

April 2025: Law in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Technology took centre stage on 23 April 2025 during ICM Talk 4, Thriving in the Age of AI: Moving Forward in the Present and Future. The Hon. Justice Tan Sri Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan addressed how AI is reshaping legal work, judicial processes, and professional responsibility. Students were challenged to think not just about technological adoption, but about ethics, judgment, and adaptability.

September 2025: Careers and Constitutional Conversations

September was a particularly active month. On 12 September 2025, The Lawyer of the Future: Navigating the New Legal Landscape brought together speakers from Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, Google, and Zul Rafique & Partners. The session offered a grounded look at how in-house roles, compliance, and technology-driven practice are reshaping legal careers.

February 2025: Celebrating Women in Law

On 28 February 2025, BAC marked International Women’s Day with the talk Women in Law, Her Law, Her Legacy. Featuring Justice Roz Mawar Rozain, Dato’ Shymala Alagendra, Dr Jasmine Begum, and Raja Soraya binti Raja Aman, the session highlighted leadership, resilience, and the evolving contributions of women in the legal profession. The discussion resonated strongly with students navigating their own identities and ambitions within the field.

July 2025: Mastering Advocacy

Advocacy skills came into focus on 24 July 2025 with ICM Talk 5, Effective Use of Oral & Written Advocacy in Trial and Appeals. The Hon. Justice Datuk S. Nantha Balan shared practical insights on persuasion, preparation, and clarity, reinforcing the idea that strong advocacy remains a cornerstone of effective lawyering regardless of changing legal landscapes.

October 2025: Human Rights and Labour Realities

On 14 October 2025, Migrant Labour Lives and Rights in Malaysia brought real-world urgency to the forefront. Speakers Mr Adrian Pereira, Assoc. Prof. Dr Yeoh Seng-Guan, and CR Selva examined labour rights, migration policy, and enforcement challenges, prompting meaningful conversations about justice beyond theory.

November 2025: Careers, Community, and Constitutional Limits

November showcased the practical and reflective sides of legal education. The BAC Lex Job Expo 2025 on 8 November connected students with potential employers and career pathways.

On 11 November, Beyond the Courtroom: Exploring In-House Legal Careers with Baker Hughes gave students a closer look at compliance and governance roles within multinational organizations.

The year concluded on a powerful note on 29 November 2025 with The Malaysian Constitution and Minority Rights: Between Promise and Peril. Featuring Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi and Gurdial Singh Nijar, and moderated by Mr Philip T. N. Koh, the session challenged students to confront constitutional ideals alongside lived realities.
