On 11th November 2025, BAC law students and faculty members gathered at the Horizon Banquet Hall in Menara BAC, PJ for an insightful session on in-house legal careers with Baker Hughes - one of the world’s leading energy technology companies.
The event featured an impressive panel of speakers — Gaithri Anbalagan, Looi Miin Tze and Yalinee Tharmapalan — with Jenifer Ng serving as moderator. Together, they delivered a candid and enriching discussion that offered students a rare glimpse into the realities of corporate legal practice across the Asia Pacific region.
The panelists walked attendees through their career journeys, highlighting the skills, decisions and turning points that shaped their paths into in-house roles. They also shared valuable insights into the day-to-day responsibilities of an in-house counsel, covering areas such as compliance, corporate governance, risk management, contract negotiation and legal operations in a complex global business environment.
Through stories and practical examples, the speakers illustrated how in-house lawyers serve as strategic partners within a company, balancing legal risk with commercial goals while upholding strong ethical standards. This helped the students develop a grounded understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with supporting a multinational corporation like Baker Hughes.
The session was highly interactive, with students actively asking questions about career readiness, required competencies and the differences between law firm and in-house practice.
Baker Hughes added a fun and engaging element by rewarding each question with exclusive company merchandise such as towels, mugs, vacuum flasks and notebooks. More gifts were handed out at the end of the session, contributing to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Beyond knowledge-sharing, the event also served as an excellent networking opportunity. Students were able to connect directly with experienced legal professionals, seek advice on career planning and gain inspiration from leaders who are shaping corporate legal frameworks in the region. Many appreciated the chance to speak with role models whose experiences made the career path feel more accessible and achievable.
Overall, the talk successfully highlighted the importance of ethical leadership, strong governance and continuous professional development within a fast-evolving corporate legal landscape. By bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world practice, Baker Hughes offered students a compelling look at the dynamic, impactful and rewarding world of in-house legal careers.
