From Briefcase to Courtroom

BAC Law Society Visits LHAG

Law students often learn by studying from books and lectures. To bridge this gap between the classroom and the workplace, BAC Law Society began organising visits to different law firms. The purpose of these trips are to hear from lawyers in different practice areas about what they do, and to gain some insight about what the workplace looks like.

The first trip, held on 5th March 2024, was a visit to Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill (LHAG). The trip started off with an introduction to the firm and what they do, given by Ms. Grace Bong from the Human Resource Department. She touched briefly on the hierarchy of the company and what a new hire can do to grow in their role as a lawyer in LHAG.

Once Ms. Grace finished her introduction, she introduced the two speakers for the panel discussion: Ms. Joyce Ong and Ms. Lee Wan Xin! Ms. Joyce is a member of the Energy, Projects & Infrastructure Practice Group, and she brings her expertise to her role at the firm, with a focus on direct service across various sectors. On the other hand, Ms. Wan Xin’s primary areas of expertise include equity capital markets encompassing initial public offerings, related party transactions and continuing listing requirements.

Ms. Joyce and Ms. Wan Xin spoke about their time at LHAG, what they do in their specific practice areas and how they juggle work with their personal lives. They shared tips with the students on what they need to do to be successful lawyers as well as insights on cases handled by their practice groups.

Once the panel discussion came to a close, the students were taken on a tour around the firm, seeing their library, reception desk, and getting a chance to peek into the virtual courtroom! They were then brought to the Partners' Lounge where they had a chance to network with other lawyers from the firm over lunch. These lawyers shared their own experiences and answered queries from the students.

This trip was educational and worthwhile for the students who learned many things about energy, equity and even work life balance.
