IACT Students Shine at The StarROAR Junior Reporter Contest Award Ceremony

On Tuesday, May 13th 2025, fifty six aspiring Mass Communication students from IACT College were celebrated at the StarROAR Junior Reporter Contest Prize Giving Ceremony. Held at the BAC Performing Arts Centre (BACPAC), the event marked the culmination of a dynamic competition designed to nurture the next generation of storytellers.
Organised by IACT College, in collaboration The Star Media Group, the contest challenged students to produce a creative 3-minute Instagram Reels news package based on a real article from The Star, spotlighting inspirational individuals.
Winners walked away with cash prizes worth RM1000, RM700, and RM400 respectively, along with certificates of achievement.
Awards were given to the top three teams:
· 1st Place: Phan Yi Ting, Diane Marie Victor and Leslie Christopher Anbiah Paul. They highlighted the success of Malaysian Actress, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh.
· 2nd Place: Bernadette Gloria Orange and Elissa Damia Borhan. Their creative video was about the struggle of a renowned street artist, Julia Volchkova.
· 3rd Place: Melissa Audreyna Royan and Nurlis Atika Ali Umar. Their video was about Malaysia's Power Couple, Muar MP, Syed Saddiq and singer Bella Astillah.
The ceremony began at 10:30am with an opening speech by Ms Nicola Wong, Head of Academics at IACT College, who praised the students for their initiative and storytelling flair. This was followed by remarks from The Star’s Senior Manager of Circulation, Mr. Khartigesu Muniyandi, who emphasised the importance of youth-driven journalism and digital content creation.
The StarROAR Junior Reporter Contest ran from 17th February to 30th March, and was open exclusively to students of IACT College. Participants were encouraged to explore innovative storytelling techniques using visuals, voiceover, and on-camera reporting. Entries were judged based on content accuracy, creativity, integration of The Star’s brand, and online engagement.
The award ceremony ended with a photo session and warm applause from faculty and industry guests, as students celebrated their achievements and looked ahead to potential careers in media and communication.
