Inside RDS: Students Explore the Legal World of Corporate Disputes

RDS in Focus: Navigating the Legal Landscape of Corporate Disputes brought together a group of BAC Law Society members for an exclusive visit to RDS Partnership, a leading full-service commercial law firm renowned for its expertise in corporate and commercial dispute resolution. The visit, on 4th July, was designed to give aspiring legal professionals firsthand exposure to real-world legal practice, and invaluable insights from some of the country’s most accomplished legal experts.

The event kicked off with registration and a short briefing at BAC before participants boarded a tour bus to RDS’ headquarters. Upon arrival, attendees were warmly welcomed by representatives from the firm. A guided office tour followed, offering participants a rare opportunity to observe the inner workings of a high-performing law firm, its collaborative environment and professional culture.

The highlight of the visit was an engaging sharing session featuring three distinguished speakers from RDS:

Hayden Tan, a Singapore International Mediation Institute Accredited Mediator and corporate dispute resolution expert, shared his personal legal journey, insights into fraud defence and tips for aspiring lawyers.

Amira Ahmad Zahar, a leading figure in tax litigation, spoke on navigating complex corporate tax disputes and the importance of work-life balance in high-stakes legal environments, while sharing her experience which gave the students insight into focus on overcoming challenges.

Raphael Tay Choon Tien, a seasoned Mergers & Acquisitions and corporate lawyer with nearly four decades of experience, provided invaluable career advice, industry trends and a forward-looking view on the growing relevance of data and IT law. His experience and knowledge was a great take away for the students that day, as they gained an insight on what matters and how to work towards achieving it.

Following the session, a dynamic Q&A and networking session gave participants the chance to engage directly with the speakers and other legal professionals from RDS. Thought-provoking discussions covered topics such as litigation versus conveyancing, cross-border legal challenges, tax frameworks and career specializations in law.

The event concluded with participants leaving not only inspired, but truly equipped with deeper knowledge of the legal profession and its evolving demands.

During this visit, the students were exposed to real-life law firm operations, insights from top legal practitioners, networking opportunities with experienced lawyers and a much-needed practical career guidance for young legal minds.
