NOVITIUS ADSERTOR LEGIS (NOVAL) MOOT COMPETITION 2025
Building the Foundations of Advocacy
NOVAL 2025 was a full-fledged advocacy journey that guided first-time mooters from learning the basics to standing confidently before experienced judges. Held across a series of workshops and culminating in the competition on 6th and 7th December 2025, NOVAL brought together law students, practitioners, and organisers in a shared pursuit of legal excellence at BAC.
The journey began with the Written Submission Workshop, aptly titled Where Words Win Cases. Led by Ms Tasha Lim of Gan Partnership, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of legal research, persuasive structure, and clear argumentation. The session combined guidance with hands-on drafting, giving students a real taste of how written advocacy works beyond textbooks. With 69 participants in attendance, it set a strong foundation for the road ahead.
Seeing the Courtroom Come Alive
Next came the Moot Simulation at the Aberystwyth Moot Court. Past accomplished mooters stepped in as guest advocates, giving participants a front-row seat to real moot proceedings. From courtroom etiquette to argument flow, this session helped demystify the process and build confidence among both NOVAL and non-NOVAL participants.
Finding Confidence Through Oral Advocacy
The Oral Submission Workshop, Voice of an Advocate, focused on the art of speaking in court. Mr Azzuan Shah of Messrs Shah & Wong guided participants through delivering submissions, handling judicial interruptions, and staying composed under pressure. Mock rounds and personalised feedback helped students refine their style and find their voice as advocates.
The Unsung Heroes: Bailiff Training
NOVAL also recognised the importance of smooth courtroom proceedings through dedicated bailiff training. Across two days, bailiffs were trained on procedure, professionalism, and real-time problem-solving. Their role proved vital in ensuring the competition ran seamlessly from start to finish.
NOVAL 2025: The Competition Proper
The competition officially kicked off on 6th December with preliminary rounds and quarter-finals. Students stepped into their first official moots with confidence, determination, and impressive preparation. From intense exchanges to strategic arguments, the standard of advocacy was nothing short of inspiring.
Day two saw the semi-finals and a thrilling grand final, judged by a distinguished panel including Datuk N. Sivananthan and experienced practitioners. The finalists delivered sharp, confident, and well-reasoned submissions, pushing themselves to their limits under rigorous questioning.
A Beginning, Not an Ending
NOVAL 2025 was a resounding success, especially for first-time mooters who walked away stronger, more confident, and more prepared for future advocacy challenges. It was a reminder that great advocates are built through guidance, practice, and courage.
More learning. More exposure. More advocacy.
