Report: Stop Hunger – Help Us Feed 10,000 B40 Families

4,000 families. RM200,000. Over 200 locations across Klang Valley, ranging from Brickfields right up to Sabak Bernam.

Free Makan’s first two phases have been an incredible success! However, we’ve seen that there is an overwhelming need across B40 communities and as such, the Free Makan campaign has expanded to feeding 10,000 B40 families and raising RM500,000 by July.

To give you more of an insight into Free Makan’s pathway to feeding 10,000 B40 families, the following report details our processes, logistics, progress, collaborators and beneficiaries:

The Campaign

On the 3rd of June 2021, the BAC Education Group, initiated a campaign called “STOP HUNGER! HELP FEED 10,000 B40 FAMILIES.” The objective of this campaign was to make sure the disadvantaged communities such as the B40 Families in PPRs, Migrant Communities, Refugees, Persons with Disabilities and workers who had lost their jobs, will not go without food due to the MCO 3.0. Hence, Mr. Raja Singham, the Founder and Managing Director of the BAC Education Group started Phase I of the campaign which was to feed 2,000 families.

Progress of Distribution:

Phase I : 2000 families 3rd June to 15th June completed

Phase II : 1000 families 16th June ongoing

Phase III : 1000 families scheduled for 23rd June

List of Items in Each Grocery Bag:

Each family receives groceries which cost RM 50.00 per family and this includes the following items:

5kg bag of rice, 1kg cooking oil, 1kg sugar, 850gm flour, 1 packet beehoon, 1 packet of Maggi Mee, 500gm Potatoes, 500gm Red Onions, 500gm White Garlic, Salt, Cream Crackers

Each Grocery Package weighs 13kg and this includes the Rice 5kg and the Groceries in the Mydin Bag 8kg. The above dry rations should be able to support a family for 2 weeks.

An additional goodie bag for the children consisting of Tiger Biscuits, Toblerone, Twisties and Cadbury Chocolates accompanies the grocery bag. This has been sponsored by an individual.

Number of Recipients:

From the 3rd of June to 24th of June 2021, 3,996 packs of grocery bags have been distributed to various locations in the KL / Klang Valley and the recipients include Women Headed Households, B40 Families at PPRs, Refugees, Migrant Workers and OKU Families. Many of these beneficiaries are also under quarantine due to COVID-19, hence the grocery packs are dropped off with the Community Leaders at the Drop-off points.

Logistics:

The BAC Education Group works with NGOs and CSOs (Community Based Organisations) who work with disadvantaged and marginalized communities who identify the POP (poorest of the poor) and submit a request to BAC. BAC orders in bulk the groceries from Mydin who then sends the supply to BAC’s Hostel called The Mansion at Jalan Tebing, Brickfields. From the Mansion, either the NGOs and CSOs pick up the grocery bags or BAC delivers directly to the communities.

Collaborations:

BAC has collaborated with the Free Food Society (FFS) and the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Wilayah on a “Matching Grant” concept whereby every grocery pack sponsored by FFS or MMA is topped up by an additional pack from BAC (1 + 1). In that respect, FFS has sponsored 500 grocery packs in Phase I and MMA Wilayah is working at 200 packs in Phase III.

MCO SOPs:

Due to the MCO, strict SOPs are followed both at the Mansion and at the delivery points, and the timings for pick up and delivery are between 10 am to 6 pm every day.
