The New Convention Protecting Lawyers: What You Need to Know

Imagine studying for years, passing exams, and finally becoming a lawyer, only to find yourself facing threats, harassment, or even physical attacks just for doing your job. Sounds terrifying, right? Unfortunately, this is a reality for many legal professionals worldwide. But here’s the good news: the Council of Europe has officially stepped in to protect lawyers with a new international treaty.
On 12 March 2025, the Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer was adopted, making history as the first international treaty dedicated to safeguarding legal professionals.
What Is This Convention About?
The new convention is designed to ensure that lawyers can do their jobs without fear. This means:
- No more intimidation, threats, or attacks for simply representing a client.
- Freedom to work independently without interference from external forces.
- Stronger legal protection for lawyers facing persecution for upholding justice.
- A commitment from governments to protect legal professionals and ensure their safety.
It sounds like common sense, but in reality, many lawyers worldwide have been harassed, arrested, or worse, just for doing their jobs. This convention aims to put an end to that.
Why Does This Matter to You?
You might be thinking, “This is great, but how does it affect me as a student?” Here’s why it’s relevant:
1. Your Future Career Needs Protection
Whether you dream of becoming a human rights lawyer, a corporate legal advisor, or a criminal defence attorney, this convention ensures that you’ll have the freedom to practise law without fear. Nobody should have to choose between their career and personal safety.
2. It Strengthens the Rule of Law
Lawyers play a crucial role in upholding justice. If lawyers can’t work freely, then access to justice is compromised for everyone. This convention reinforces the rule of law, making sure that legal professionals can fight for justice without becoming victims themselves.
3. It Sets a Global Standard
Even though the convention was adopted by the Council of Europe, its impact is far-reaching. Countries around the world, including Malaysia and the UK, take cues from international legal standards. This means it could influence greater protection for lawyers globally.
What Happens Next?
The convention will officially be opened for signatures on 13 May 2025 in Luxembourg. For it to take effect, at least eight countries (including six Council of Europe member states) must ratify it. Once that happens, an expert group will oversee compliance, ensuring that governments follow through on their commitments.
This isn’t just another legal document—it’s a game-changer for lawyers and future lawyers like you. The legal profession is about standing up for justice, and now, with this convention, the world is standing up for lawyers too.
As a law student, let this be a reminder that the field you’re entering is one of courage, responsibility, and impact. Stay informed, stay engaged, and most importantly, stay committed to the principles of justice that brought you here in the first place.
See you soon Legal Eagles!
