Up Close with Wildlife
BAC Students Experience Conservation at Zoo Negara
On 11 December 2025, students from BAC and Reliance College took their learning beyond the classroom and into the heart of wildlife conservation by participating in Zoo Negara’s KeeperKu Program 2025. This immersive initiative, organised by Malaysia’s National Zoo, brought together students from schools and higher institutions nationwide, offering a rare chance to experience firsthand what it truly means to care for animals and safeguard biodiversity.
Formerly known as the My Keeper Program, KeeperKu is a hands-on volunteer experience designed for students aged 16 and above, with special perks such as free admission for the first five volunteers. The programme provides a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a zookeeper, gaining practical exposure to the daily operations of Malaysia’s National Zoo while fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation.
A Day in the Life of a Zookeeper
From the very start, students dove straight into hands-on tasks that are at the heart of animal care. Guided by experienced zoo professionals, they helped with daily duties such as preparing meals, cleaning enclosures, and creating enrichment activities to stimulate the animals both physically and mentally. Under the warm morning sun, students gained invaluable insights into animal behaviour, diets, and habitat management. Beyond the technical skills, they discovered that true wildlife care goes far beyond observation; requiring dedication, consistency, and genuine compassion.
Beyond Animal Care: Real-World Exposure
The KeeperKu Program goes beyond hands-on animal interaction. Our students were also exposed to various departments within Zoo Negara, including education, public relations, customer service and the veterinary hospital. This holistic approach allowed them to understand how different teams work together to ensure the well-being of animals while educating the public.
Through this experience, students gained a clearer picture of the challenges faced by zoos today, from conservation efforts and animal welfare to public engagement and sustainability. Such exposure helped broaden their perspectives on career pathways related to wildlife, conservation and environmental management.
Learning the Importance of Conservation for wildlife..
One of the core elements of the KeeperKu Program is conservation education. Students learned about the importance of safeguarding natural ecosystems, protecting endangered species and preserving biodiversity for future generations. These lessons reinforced the idea that conservation is a shared responsibility, extending far beyond the walls of the zoo. By witnessing conservation efforts firsthand, students were able to develop a stronger appreciation for nature and a deeper understanding of how human actions directly impact wildlife and the environment.
Skills That Last a Lifetime
Throughout the programme, students honed both practical and interpersonal skills, including teamwork, responsibility, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Above all, the experience fostered a deep sense of accountability and empathy; qualities that will serve them well in any career they choose.
A Meaningful and Memorable Experience
The KeeperKu Program perfectly reflects BAC Education Group’s commitment to holistic learning; an approach that goes beyond textbooks and lectures. Through hands-on participation, students gained real-world experience, developed a deeper appreciation for animals, and strengthened their sense of environmental stewardship.
By the end of the day, students left Zoo Negara with not only new knowledge and skills but also cherished memories and a renewed respect for the natural world. For many, the experience was a powerful reminder that even small, dedicated efforts can make a meaningful impact in the field of wildlife conservation.
BAC Education Group is committed to fostering opportunities that encourage students to explore, serve, and make a meaningful difference, equipping them with real-world experiences that shape both character and purpose.
A big shoutout to the students who participate and to Malaysia’s National Zoo for this beautiful program and experience.
