ALSA BAC’s first 2026 visit to this distinguished Law firm (MKPK), on the 10th of April was a step beyond the lecture hall and into the dynamic world of maritime law, where legal strategy meets the complexities of global trade. This visit offered more than just an insight; it was an immersive experience into the fast-paced realm of Admiralty and commercial litigation, where every case carries the weight of international waters.
The visit offered participants a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to the world of Admiralty and commercial litigation. Carefully designed to extend learning beyond the classroom, the visit immersed students in the practical realities of Malaysia’s maritime legal sector. Aimed at aspiring maritime lawyers among BAC students, the programme for the day provided in-depth insight into the technicalities of maritime law, particularly the unique procedural frameworks governing the shipping industry.
Participants explored key concepts such as vessel arrests, the distinction between in rem and in personam jurisdictions, and the firm’s strategic approach to resolving international trade disputes. Through engaging and interactive sessions with experienced practitioners at MKPK, students developed a deeper appreciation for the precision required in handling maritime claims, including cargo disputes and marine insurance matters.
Led by Philip T.N. Koh Senior Partner at MKPK and his pupils on Litigation Strategy & Procedural Mastery, The focus on stay of proceedings revealed its use in complex commercial and maritime disputes, a delicate balance between court jurisdiction and arbitration clauses, highlighting how skilled practitioners navigate these challenges to protect client interests effectively.
The programme then shifted to the financial dimension of legal practice, to financial and capital market insights. Ms. Chen shed light on the fiscal intricacies underpinning maritime and corporate transactions, offering a perspective often overlooked in traditional legal studies. Complementing this, Mr. Jack unpacked the IPO process, detailing the stringent regulatory framework and meticulous preparation required to list a shipping company, demonstrating the lawyer’s critical role in capital market success. The students were also given a guided tour of the firm provided a behind-the-scenes look at its professional environment and operations. It was particularly striking to observe the seamless collaboration between the maritime, corporate, and litigation teams, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary synergy in handling high-value, complex cases.
It was truly amazing to note how the firm took initiative to set an Interactive Knowledge Assessment Learning was reinforced through an engaging quiz session that tested understanding of Admiralty law and corporate procedures. The interactive format not only solidified key concepts but also helped dispel common misconceptions in an enjoyable, competitive setting, not to mention the top three winners who brought home surprise gifts from MKPK.
